All major faces in WWE are ranked by wrestling ability

10 Min Read

Each era of WWE We featured one or several names with a dream position of becoming a face of the company. A wrestler with that role must perform at the highest level as the biggest star the fans pay to see. The top stars have great personalities and are tasked with providing strong matches to close the show.

The change from ERA to ERA made the ability within the ring even more important. Technical wrestling is characterized by a pure coincidence of telling the story through submissions, counters, and power, weapons, and quality within the ring, more common than high-flying movements. All major faces in WWE are ranked based on technical wrestling skills and nothing else.

vs Randy Savage (Wrestle Mania 7)

WWE booked Ultimate Warrior in the way they hoped all the new talent could happen to them. The Warriors got over the fantastic entrance theme and colorful presentations before destroying the enemy in a fast match.

This popularity from the push led to a short-term fight as the face of WWE after beating Hulk Hogan. Unfortunately, WWE is trying to get more backfire from the warriors as he struggled to play good matches and had the worst technical wrestling skills of someone who played a similar role as him.

Hulk Hogan

I didn’t care about the quality inside the ring

vs the Rock (WrestleMania 18)

Hulk Hogan was good enough to have a decent match and some classics, but he didn’t mind doing it consistently. Vince McMahon made Hogan the first face of WWE when he won the WWE Championship and was pushed for 10 years.

Hogan preferred to have a dull match with his formula, selling for 20 minutes until he “Hulking Up” for a comeback victory. WWE ditched the formula to improve the quality in the ring after Hogan left the company in 1993.

vs Steve Austin (WrestleMania 17)

WWE may have been roughly shaped when Steve Austin needed a year off to undergo neck surgery a few years after running as the face of the company. Rock helped the company avoid a negative decline as he slipped into the role and continued his momentum.

Many fans believe that 2000 is the best individual year in the company’s history thanks to Rock, which leads it. However, Lock even admits that he is not the best tech wrestler. Charisma and pure athleticism helped Rock play a good match despite providing some movements like the Sharpshooter in a sloppy way.

Bruno Sammartino

Match was more basic in his time

vs Billy Graham

Bruno Sammartino helped Vince McMahon Sr. become a WWE powerhouse in New York during the territorial era. Fans enjoyed reigning Sammartino’s legendary title and helped establish the WWE Championship as the highest award.

San Martino had solid technical wrestling skills, as his style was all mat-based. However, fans were used to dominating the match until the end, so they weren’t too excited about his match like in the future era.

Rule of Rome

In terms of technical skills, it’s in the middle of the pack

vs. Cody Rhodes (WrestleMania 40)

Bret Hart and other legends have appointed the ruler of Rome among the most balanced wrestlers in the industry. Governance was able to perform any style necessary and spent quite a bit of time facing the role of WWE as Vince McMahon’s respected prospects.

Faithrun was characterized by Roman playing a good match, but he did as much of his power move as he served in technical style. As Reigns’ heels as a top star ran, he often started slowly and played a long match that turned into over the top storytelling for many people who intervened at the end.

John Cena

He has evolved into a great wrestler as a face

vs John Cena (Bank Money 2011)

John Cena spent almost ten years as the face of WWE, and no one challenged the role until he stepped back into Rome’s reign. In the early years of Cena’s push, you’ll see him ranked last in technical wrestling as fans chanted “You can’t wrestling.”

Cena began improving in the ring to have a classic and powerful technical match with CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Shawn Michaels and AJ Styles. After becoming an all-out strong worker, Cena can have argued that she played the most complete and great match in WWE history.

Steve Austin

There was a reputation for technical wrestlers before WWE

vs Bret Hart (WrestleMania 13)

Steve Austin was considered one of the best tech wrestlers in the world during WCW stints before moving to WWWE. Critics had hoped Austin would be a better hand in the ring than the character of a generation of superstars, but fate saw him change his way.

Stone Cold had great technical matches when needed for names like Bret Hart and Triple H. But Austin had a more explosive style to suit characters bigger than life when he got over and changed the industry with his incredible character work.

Cody Rhodes

Fans love his style in the ring

Vs. Rule of Rome (WrestleMania 40)

Cody Rhodes has dramatically improved in a variety of styles, away from WWE, which competes with talent from around the world. WWE Return has made Cody a much better technical wrestler and applied it along with other styles of opponents he faces.

Rhodes can pull off high-flying moves when needed and provide great hardcore matches, but he is most comfortable playing a good mat-based match. Running as the face of WWE continued to document the business as fans loved Cody as a babyface.

2

Shawn Michaels

Considered a goat in the ring

vs. Undertaker (WrestleMania 40)

Shawn Michaels felt like a generational change that fans had hoped for from the main event wrestler. Others can offer technical wrestling matches, but Michaels did it all from high spots from the top rope to technical exchanges and hardcore matches.

Matt classics against Bret Hart, Owen Hart, Kurt Angle, John Cena and others have shown that HBK can thrive in technical matches. While the running as the face of the company had some business hiccups, Michaels gave fans great matches with each PPV.

vs Steve Austin (Wrestlemania 13)

Vince McMahon took a bold risk to make Bret Hart the next real face of the company after Hulk Hogan left. Hart had a more normal look than the previous bodybuilder’s physique in that role in WWE, but he made up for it with the ring.

Technical wrestling is Brett’s specialty, raising fans’ expectations for more advanced storytelling in matches. Hart is undoubtedly the biggest technical wrestler with names like Kurt Angle and Brian Danielson, and is later looking to acquire his legacy. The other wrestlers in the same ballpark as Brett, technical skills, had no role as much as he became the face of WWE.
