Vince Russo may not be in professional wrestling after all. Former headwriters at WWE, WCW and TNA have distanced themselves from the business for many years, but he has admitted to thinking of surprising returns.
I’ll talk to you \Writing with Russo, a wrestling writerthe 64-year-old told Chris Featherstone he hopes that longtime promotions will join him on the team. “It’s not a mainstream organization, there’s an organization there, but you know who it is. They’ve actually been running for 25 years. They’re trying to pull me back. I’m doing everything to say, ‘No, no, no.”
Russo became infamous in the wrestling world in the late 1990s, when he helped lead the WWE creative team during the attitude era. He was the driving force behind the edgy storyline that helped Raw dominate with the ratings. In 1999 he set out for WWE for WCW. His time was filled with controversial angles and creative confusion, including booking himself as the WCW World Heavyweight Champion in 2000. After WCW was folded, he worked for over a decade known as impact wrestling, and his run included both admiration and critique of creative innovation.
Russo eventually stepped away from wrestling shattering, annoyed by the creative direction of the modern show. Russo claims he hasn’t seen AEW since 2021 and plans to stop watching WWE completely after turning 65 next year. “You know how you really make great sounds on paper, but then you start thinking about reality. Russo said. “Really, honestly, it’s the worst thing for me at my age… I hate traveling. I hate flying and going anywhere. I hate that.”
In 2021, Russo claimed he had contacted then-Chairman Vince McMahon about consulting for the company, but the discussion fell apart after what he called. “Sad and unhappy” Email exchange.
It is still to be seen whether this new offer will seduce him enough to revive him. But one thing is clear. Vince Russo still has people in the industry that he believes he can take something to the table.
