This Saturday, Gunther will be playing Pat McCuffy one-on-one in the backlash in St. Louis, Missouri. McAfee has not participated in singles action since 2023, but after “The Ring General” attempted to attack Michael Cole following his defeat in the World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Mania 41, the ultimate recall would challenge him. The expected McAfee will become a manageable opponent for Gunther on Saturday, but the return of the WWE Hall of Fame could have an impact on who is winning.
According to Wrestlevotes, multiple sources have confirmed that Goldberg’s name has been discussed internally within the WWE throughout the past week, with his return reportedly being “inevitable” in the near future. It is also the first time that a former Universal Champion name has been raised since his interaction with Gunther at Bad Blood last October. Thus, Wrestlevotes suggests that Goldberg’s return may be scheduled for a rebound that could be involved during or after Gunther’s match with McAfee.
Earlier this year, Goldberg said he felt like “a trillion dollar” after undergoing stem cell therapy, and revealed he’s returning to the WWE ring this summer. Additionally, the former WCW star confirmed he will be retiring this year, and said he was interested in “passing the torch” at this stage of his career, listing Gunther as the perfect final opponent. Goldberg’s latest match took place three years ago at the Elimination Chamber, and failed to defeat the Roman rule due to the Jeddah Superdome universal title.
