Renowned wrestling announcer Jim Ross was diagnosed with colon cancer earlier this month and underwent surgery for the condition on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. The 73-year-old broadcasting legend shared on his “Grilling JR” podcast that doctors expect to find cancer in two areas and that he will likely remain hospitalized for about six days while undergoing less invasive surgery.

Ross, famous for his iconic commentary during WWE’s attitude era and his current role with All Elite Wrestling (AEW), remains hopeful despite the challenging news. “I have mentally and physically prepared myself to face this,” he said.

The wrestling community has rallied in support of Ross, including AEW CEO Tony Khan and WWE Hall of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin. Their encouragement has helped Ross feel strong and energized before his operation.

Although facing serious health issues, Ross has no intention of retiring. He plans to scale back his schedule and focus on select appearances and events, but he intends to continue his AEW work after his recovery.

Previously, Ross battled skin cancer in 2021 and underwent hip surgery in February 2024. He hopes to return to AEW in Texas as he progresses through his recovery later this summer.

Fan Take: Jim Ross’s enduring presence is vital to wrestling fans because his voice and insights have shaped the sport’s history. His determination to keep working despite health challenges is inspiring and underscores his invaluable role in bringing wrestling stories to life for fans across generations.
