It’s fair to assume that not only did he lose the WWE World Heavyweight Championship to Jawsaw, but that no one saw Gunther’s current creative direction not coming. Most people would have thought Gunther would soon re-enter the World Heavyweight Championship scene, or at least try to pursue a new rival. Instead, Gunther spent several weeks after the mania was booked to suffocate Pat McAfee, pause and face McAfee in the backlash.
In a recent edition of “Wrestling and Freddie,” actor and former WWE writer Freddie Prinze Jr. admitted that he’s a bit confused about what WWE is doing on Gunther. But the “Wing Commander” star thinks about the angle and believes that if Gunther has other potential options coming out of USO’s loss, Mancer thinks it’s the right course for him to snap and face off against McAfee.
“When Gunther was defeated, it was like, ‘Oh**t, what’s going to happen to Gunther?’,” Prinze Jr. said. “Because he looks weak to lose the title. Clearly, the stronger, better guy won. [in] Jay lie. Jay looks great. Gunther put him down… so Gunther loses that match, which weakens his character. It’s strange to ask him for a rematch. To have to work with him in his way is to weaken the character even further.
“So what can you do with him? Maybe you do something from the character of f**** g so he loses it when he gets criticized or ridiculed by the commentary crew, he goes outside, he attacks someone, physically assaults two different people, and f**** g loses his s**.”
